A Michigan rental application is a form used by a landlord to screen a tenant prior to entering into a rental contract. The landlord will commonly require a non-refundable fee that is paid whether or not the tenant is approved for housing. The process takes between 24-48 hours and, after approval, a lease will be written.
Laws
- Application Fee – There is no limit on how much a landlord can demand application fees (no statute).
- Security Deposit – The landlord cannot charge a tenant more than one and a half (1.5) months’ rent as a security deposit ( § 554.602 ).
